Sidebranch - The Netherlands
We provide training-on-the-job to bring your team up to speed with technologies like OpenEmbedded Core and Yocto Project to realize your next Linux product. We are experienced with board-bring up, boot loader modifications, firmware upgrade and provisioning, device driver development, application design, FPGA design and board design services. Typically we engage early during the architectural phase to help make system-wide decisions on hardware and software, and help you get up to speed with all involved technologies. Your team can make a quick-start on realizing the core application, while the team members learn how an Embedded Linux project is realized with OpenEmbedded and Yocto Project. Our OpenEmbedded training is on-the-job meaning we take the hardware used in your project and focus on things that need to be done for the project realization.

We work with international customers, either on-site or remotely. We speak Dutch and English and read German. The founder of Sidebranch, Leon Woestenberg, has over 20 years experience with Linux and over 10 years experience with OpenEmbedded.

Site/user configuration
We would like to improve the possibilities for a developer to easily configure his/her environment to minimize the required changes that are needed after having sourced oe-init-build-env for a new build directory. Typically there are some options that must always be applied for all developers, e.g., proxy settings, and some that should be applied, e.g., locations of global download mirrors and sstate-caches. These typically belong in a site.conf file common to all developers. Then there are options that I as a developer always want as my defaults, e.g., how many bitbake threads and make processes to use in parallel, and to enable debug-tweaks and debug-tools by default. There is currently no suitable configuration file for these options.

To make it easier to configure these kind of static default options we suggest:
* That we add support for a new configuration file conf/user.conf that is included by bitbake.conf, e.g., after site.conf.
* Add a user specific directory to BBPATH by default, e.g., "${HOME}/.openembedded".
** It is also suggested that the name of this directory is available as a variable set in bitbake.conf, e.g., "OE_USER_DIR", so that it can be used as a default location for, e.g., DL_DIR in one's user.conf file by setting DL_DIR = "${OE_USER_DIR}/downloads".
* Make it possible to inject directories into BBPATH via the environment, e.g., via a BBPATH_EXTRA variable. This can then be used to specify the common directory (e.g., NFS mount) where conf/site.conf can be found for all developers.

We have a similar solution in place today in our layers. But the drawback is that it is only supported when at least one of our own layers are included in the build, which means that if I, e.g., want to build with only Poky, it will not work out-of-the-box since it will no longer find the site.conf that I must use, and my user.conf that I expect for all my own tweaks are of course not used either.
You are going to FOSDEM and can spend some time at the OpenEmbedded stand to explain interested individuals the virtues of OpenEmbedded? Add your name and on which day you'll be available.

* Robert Schuster (Saturday, Sunday)
* Alex Lennon (Saturday, Sunday)
* Henning Heinold (Saturday, Sunday)
* Ulf Samuelsson (Saturday, Sunday)
* Paul Eggleton (Saturday, Sunday)
* Marco Cavallini (Saturday)

Tasks
A bunch of tasks need to be carried out to make our attendance a pleasant experience. Each task needs a volunteer who is willing to help.

Table cloth
We only have a single table cloth (it washed but has a negligible stain from a quick soldering action that happened last year). We definitely need a 2nd one to also cover our second table. The FOSDEM tables are pretty huge (2.5m length), so chose a reasonably sized cloth. Additionally it would be super cool to have the OpenEmbedded logo printed on it. The idea would be to show the logo on the front side of our tables. For that the 'OE' sign should not be taller than say 50cm (The tables are approximately 70cm high.).

Volunteer: Philip Balister plans to bring 2 table cloths carrying the OE logo.

Bringing an TFT LCD
Displaying a presentation during the time of the conference makes our stand visually more attractive. We have a simple OpenDocument presentation in our SCM that can be used for this. However we need a display as well. If you come by car and can transport a display that'd be great. Getting a screen is not so complicated. Robert Schuster could send one to you by mail.

Volunteer:

Poster
A nice poster with updated sponsor was used for 2011's LinuxTag in Berlin. This poster needs to be brought to FOSDEM. Where is it right now and can it be taken to Brussels?

Volunteer:

Flyers
Years ago we printed a bunch (2500) of flyers. We still have a bunch of them left (exact number unknown; will update this as soon as I know). As the text is already a few years old it makes sense to update the actual document (it is in openembedded/contrib/marketing/oe-flyer.pdf) and print new ones.

Volunteer:

Device Tags
People standing in front of our booth often want to know what kind of device it is that blinks so funnily. ;) We could make things easier by being able to print small tags providing some information about board manufacturer, CPU, RAM and what its relation to OpenEmbedded is.

Volunteer:

Alex Lennon - please send details of any tags needed to me, (ajlennon at dynamicdevices.co.uk) in reasonable time.

Devices
Robert Schuster - Pandaboard - Hopefully booting Angstrom with some desktop and Java foo.

Alex Lennon - Gem (i.MX28 based telematics board) - Booting OpenEmbedded with an end-user demo running (hopefully)

Ulf Samuelsson - Atmel AT91SAM9Gx5 Kit with 5 CPU Modules (G15,G25,G35,X25,X35)
Will boot the OpenEmbedded from www.linux4sam.org
A raffle for the kit will be held in the Embedded DevRoom,
and you have to visit the OpenEmbedded stand to leave your business card.

Flyers and posters
You can bring and/or print OpenEmbedded flyers and posters? Add your name and what you'll bring.

Power extensions, adapters and other stand material
Bringing devices is cool but we need a way to bring power to them too. Additionally people might need power sockets for different systems than the european one. List your name and what stuff you can bring.

* Robert Schuster:
**3-socket power extension (EU)
**tape
**WiFi-Router in client mode to provide Internet access for Ethernet-based devices
**2 1m-Ethernet cables

* Robert Schuster:
**3-socket power extension (EU)
**tape
**WiFi-Router in client mode to provide Internet access for Ethernet-based devices
**2 1m-Ethernet cables
Hotels
Although FOSDEM itself takes place at the ULB campus, most folks prefer to stay nearer the city centre.

The Astrid has traditionally been the default choice for OE developers, though there are many other hotels in the area. If you are staying in a hotel other than the Astrid, feel free to add it to this section for the benefit of others.

A task-oriented guide to creating a patch
Note: More details are available on the policy pages, but this document is good enough for most beginners.

* Patchwork
* Commit Policy

Let's say you create a new bitbake recipe for OpenEmbedded and you'd like to submit it for inclusion (and you've already tested that it works, of course).

Set up git
Properly configuring git (using tekkub@gmail.com as an example user)

On Debain / Ubuntu (Note: Fedora uses `yum` OpenSuse uses zypper or yast)

sudo aptitude install git-core git-email

These are important to the commit meta-data

git config --global user.name "Tekkub"
git config --global user.email "tekkub@gmail.com"

Any Google Apps account

git config --global sendemail.smtpserver smtp.gmail.com
git config --global sendemail.smtpserverport 587
git config --global sendemail.smtpencryption tls
git config --global sendemail.smtpuser tekkupl@gmail.com

You can use the --envelope-sender option to have the email appear to from the address you are subscribed to the list. You will need to use the Accounts and import tab ender the gmail settings tab. Use the Send mail ass selection to address you want to send email from.

Create and Commit your patch
1. First you have to subscribe to the mailing-list openembedded-devel@lists.openembedded.org to be able to post your patch. See Mailing lists

2. Commit with a concise and descriptive message - one that explains your changes in a way others get a short overview without
looking at the code.

cd org.openembedded.dev/ # or whereever you keep your clone of the repo
git add recipes/nodejs/
git commit -s # don't use the -m option but include my signature

nodejs: added recipe for v0.2.1

* included libev-cross patch which prevents wscript from executing cross-compiled code
* included node-cross patch which forwards DEST_CPU to v8's ARCH

3. Create your patch. Use -N for N commits to be included in the patch. Use -s to add a signoff line like "Signed-off-by: Tekku B. <tekkub@gmail.com>"

git format-patch --subject-prefix="PATCH" -1 # creating a patch for my only commit

If you are submitting a second version also add
--subject-prefix="PATCH v2"

4. Send your patch to patchwork

git send-email --to=openembedded-devel@lists.openembedded.org 001-nodejs-added-recipe-for-v0.2.1

Your patch will be immediately visible on http://patchwork.openembedded.org/

5. Once your patch has been accepted or rejected, create an account and update the status to "accepted" or "rejected"

5++. If you get soft-rejected (a lot of feedback), you should make changes according to the feedback, submit the next version, and update the status of the previous patch to "superseded". Remember to use `--subject-prefix` to mark the patch iteration.

Appendix
steps for people which don't have smtp access for git
Patches should not be set as attachment but inline.

If you do not have smtp access to your email account you have two options:

1. use a different account (e.g. gmail). you can make one especially
for this. Note that the account may differ from the one in signed-off
(although that is inconvenient)

2. just include the patch in the body of your email. Make sure you use
an email client that does not touch the message (turn spaces in tabs,
wrap lines etc etc).

A good mail client to do so is pine (or alpine) or mutt.
For more information refer to Documentation/email-clients.txt in linux
kernel sources.

The OpenEmbedded Testing branch is a git branch of the OE metadata with the goal of providing a recent snapshot of OE that is known to be build-able for a subset of distros, machines, images, and host workstations. The goal of this effort is twofold:
# the testing branch represents a reasonably stable version of OE that builds for most tested combinations
# for all tested combinations, we list the last known-good-build tag so that users can always start with something that will build.

As an example on how to configure your test setup see TestingScript
Testing Procedure
The general process for managing the testing branch is:
# Starting at approximately 9PM GMT of every week, the dev.openembedded.org branch is branched to the testing-next branch.
# Whoever creates the testing-next branch sends an email to the oe-devel list with a subject of "testing branch YYYY-MM-DD". All volunteers preferably do an incremental build (from last weeks snapshot), then clean tmp and do a clean build of the combinations they test. If time or resources are not available, then incremental builds are not required. After builds are complete, update the above chart, and report status/issues as replies to the above email.
# If most combinations build by following Thursday, the testing-next branch is merged to the testing branch. Regardless, the repository is tagged with the tested_YYYY-MM-DD tag. An annotated tag is used with a message that includes a text copy of the above table with variations that have been tested building for this cycle. The reason we tag after testing is complete is so that we can include status in the annotated tag. This way information about what was tested with each tagged version is captured in the repository. A link is added for easy reference to the log below.
# If a build fails, then issues are reported, and we try to get issues fixed before the next weeks testing cycle.
# Not every combination is tested on every cycle, due to availability of testers, so we list the last known built version in the above chart. Testers are responsible for updating the above chart.
# All testers are encouraged to use Tinderbox so problems are automatically reported and logged, and issues in the above chart can be linked to Tinderbox.

We strongly encourage chip and SBC/Module vendors to become involved in this effort to ensure OE works for your platforms.
