I take issue with this appraisal, having maintained the fido stable
branch and pitched in with some of the stable branches since then.
Maintaining a stable branch is a significant amount of work, which only
increases with each release and that most maintainers end up doing in
addition to their day jobs.
Even if this did barely move the needle in terms of overall suffering,
though I very much doubt that is true, we would need a *very* good
reason to force that suffering on the unsung heroes who maintain stable
releases.
