I'm just about near the end and finally attempting to run do_rootfs for
x11-gpe-image, and the operation fails. 

If I take a look at the log file, I see lots of statements that look like this:

opkg: Cannot create directory `/var/lib/opkg': Permission denied

It seems as though the opkg-cl binary, built and residing in the OE tree, is
trying to write the root filesystem of my workstation. It's a good thing I'm
not doing this as root :)
