[OE-core] what exactly might set BDIR in scripts/oe-buildenv-internal?

  was just perusing oe-buildenv-internal and i'm puzzled by this at
the beginning:

if [ "x$BDIR" = "x" ]; then        <-- ???
    if [ "x$1" = "x" ]; then

  under what circumstances will $BDIR ever have a value?
