Honestly, I'm not really sure what all of the options are here.  I know that RPM
supports a mode (designed for kernels and modules) that allow you to install
multiple versions of the same package at the same time.  I'm not sure if this is
what you want... but the initial install can only be a single version.

Using RPM (or smart) basically you have to tell the system to 'install' vs
'upgrade'.  And as long as there are no conflicting files, it will happily do
more then one version of the same package.

(I doubt dpkg or deb support this, but I don't know.)


As for the changes below.  (Without annotating too much,) the things I would
look out for are:

*) Various pieces of the system may assume package names, such as
'kernel-modules' or 'kernel-image' or ...  So it's wise to provide an RPROVIDE
for any packages that provide these elements.  RREPLACES would also be needed to
support target upgrades from the 'old naming' to the 'new' naming.  (With
appropriate checks that the 'newname' is not the same as the old name.)

*) Different names for the packages should work -- but you'll need to make sure
they're providing different file paths or non-conflict files... otherwise you
could get conflicts and install failures.

With the above said, the only thing that I see that is likely missing is the
RPROVIDES.. and RREPLACES to support an on-target upgrade mode.
