I assume we can expect a patch from Saul in another three years to
change it back again.  Plus ca change... :-}

More seriously though, I think this is a good change.  I have had
essentially this patch locally ever since it was most recently changed
in the other direction, and there never seemed to be any very
compelling reason for the BPN-based version.
