in this discussion I really miss information and arguments *for* a particular
solution.

both git and hg. The features seem to be more or less the same. The key
advantage of git is that it is more familiar to many developers. The key
advantage of hg would be a much cleaner and well designed user interface which
is more attractive for people who need to get used to it.
