Running 3.5.4.2-rc2 on poodle
I was able to synchronize my calendar/contacts under 3.5.4 using Kontact on my
desktop PC.  It would connect to port 4243 on the Zaurus and execute FTP-like
commands, such as

USER root
PASS Qtopia
(etc.)

This no longer works, as the connection is refused before any text is
transferred.  A manual local telnet to this port doesn't work either.  SSH and
other networking seems to work fine, however these don't help me synchronize. 
Any ideas?  Thanks.

You probably already know this, but it is the "qpe" binary that listens on this
port.
