Summary: Akita does not function as a USB storage device
Product: Openembedded
Version: OpenZaurus 3.5.4.x
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: Distributions
AssignedTo: openembedded-issues at lists.openembedded.org
ReportedBy: armagon_ca at yahoo.ca
QAContact: tinderbox-oe at gmx.net
Summary
-------
I am unable to make my Sharp Zaurus C1000 (Akita) function as a USB Storage
Device. This would be handy for all major OSes can read from USB Storage
devices, such as cameras, card readers, and memory sticks.
I believe that this bug is a known issue (which I could not find in the bug
database), and it may affect all handhelds using a pxa27x processor.
Steps To Reproduce
------------------
1. Make sure your handheld is not connected via USB-Cable to your PC.
2. You will need a device-file that you can mount as the storage area. It
should be possible to use your SD or CF card -- the whole thing -- or to create
a loop-back filesystem on it to use for this purpose, following the
instructions at: http://www.linux-usb.org/gadget/file_storage.html. [I opted
to create a 16 MB loop-back file for this purpose, and I formatted it with
FAT.]
3. Make sure you don't have any USB-gadget modules active. Do a 'lsmod | grep
g_' to check, and if anything comes up, 'rmmod <thing-that-came-up>'.
4. Active the g_file_storage module. I did this: 'modprobe g_file_storage
file=/media/card/misc/share'
5. Plug in the USB cable between your handheld and your PC.
Expected Result
---------------
Your PC will see a USB storage device, and possibly offer to automatically
mount it, or, in any case, allow you to mount it. At this point, you can
transfer files from the PC to the Handheld.
Actual Result
-------------
I found that the PC kepts resetting the USB connection.
On my handheld, running 'dmesg' yielded this output after activating the module
but before plugging in the USB cable.
g_file_storage gadget: File-backed Storage Gadget, version: 28 November 2005
g_file_storage gadget: Number of LUNs=1
g_file_storage gadget-lun0: ro=0, file: /media/card/misc/share
After I plugged in the cable, I saw this from 'dmesg':
udc: USB reset
udc: USB reset
udc: USB reset
udc: USB reset
udc: USB reset
udc: USB reset
udc: USB reset
udc: USB reset
g_file_storage gadget: full speed config #1
udc: USB reset
[above line is repeated several times]
A little later I looked again, and all I saw were lines saying 'udc: USB
reset'.
On my PC, which is running kubuntu 6.06, the kernel logs had this to say:

I also tested this with a PC running Windows XP, and got similar results.
