The following seems in improve handling ejecting and insertions. Not perfect,
but almost there.

start_serial() {
    setserial /dev/$DEVICE baud_base 921600

    PID=`/sbin/hciattach -p /dev/$DEVICE bcsp`
    echo $PID > /var/run/hciattach.pid
}
stop_serial() {
    do_fuser -k -HUP /dev/$DEVICE > /dev/null

   if [ -s /var/run/hciattach.pid ] ; then
        kill `cat /var/run/hciattach.pid`
        rm /var/run/hciattach.pid
   fi
}
