Thanks to José Bernardo Bandos Rodrigues, after some discussion on the mailing
list, it was found out to be an Ubuntu issue (/bin/sh being /bin/dash not
/bin/bash, http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.handhelds.openembedded/15110)
after all.  Thanks to everyone that participated in the discussion.
