IMHO, the ext3 kernel module must be included into the basic rootfs image, so
that SD can contain ext3 filesystem and altboot can boot it from the basic
rootfs image.

This is even more important, as the collie has unstable SD driver, that can get
stuck, thus requiring full fsck. That in turn requires full disk scan which
requires using the same buggy SD driver... Chicken-egg problem.
