it also seems the wifi is enabled and dhcp attempted by default when booting or
resuming from suspend. by browsing dmesg, i suspect that it is the hotplug
machinery that is responsible.

powering off the wifi via 'usbctl' (as worked in sharp rom) does not work.

also the opie network applet has trouble with starting/stopping the wlan0
interface. it might be because 'ifdown wlan0' gives an error message "iwconfig:
wlan0 no such interface" or similar (but brings the device down (although, the
led remains lit))
