OK, this is strange but installing xmms-embedded breaks my opie installation. 
It seems that there is some incompatibility between the packages I have
installed and xmms-embedded.  I am not yet sure how to narrow this further
down, but I can with absolute certainty single out xmms-embedded as one end of
the problem.

/etc/init.d/opie restart from console via ssh works fine

ipkg install xmms-embedded;/etc/init.d/opie restart gives me a blank screen on
my collie, opie is permanently broken.  After installation I can't even stop
opie anymore to get back to the console on the touchscreen.

ipkg remove xmms-embedded;reboot fixes the situation.

Unfortunately, I have had opie die on me like this too often in the past.  This
is quite unstable.  Upgrading oftentimes leaves me with a system that will not
bring up a GUI and that is hard or impossible to fix even over ssh.  Luckily,
altboot loop files are a very easy way to backup but I do not always remember.
