I used -v on the compiler call to see exactly in what step it fails. It's in
the collect2 step while linking.

Now, see this. I get a "bad -rpath option" but NO such option was specified on
the command line.

So, it is probably built-in somewhere. My next step will be to find out where
and bother ppl at #oe irc.
