That was a typo. Permissions on /tmp (/var/tmp) should be 1777, not 755.
Non-root users need to be able to write there. 

In retrospect, I'm not sure how this happens, as the tarball has the correct
permissions:

gpe-image-3.5.4.1-alpha2-spitz.rootfs.tar.gz | grep /var/tmp
drwxrwxrwt root/root         0 2006-04-06 08:57:37 ./var/tmp/
---

I can't reproduce the problem without putting the microdrive back in the spitz.
