I agree with the result that PID handling is probably a waste of time, but for
different reasons.
If you replace sysvinit with daemontools (or runit), then you don't need all of
the silliness of PID files.
Regardless, it seems that this bug has been fixed (for me) in Angstrom (perhaps
by a fix to the temp file cleanup during boot?)
