The gui comes up and after abiword crash with this error:

abiword:6431): Gdk-WARNING **: gdk_property_get(): length value has wrapped in
calculation (did you pass G_MAXLONG?)
The program 'abiword' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 1946 error_code 8 request_code 67 minor_code 0)
