It could be related to mmc kernel modules loading (which at altboot stage is
not done yet).

I suppose the same theory holds regarding CF, as no cards are initialized
(using cardctl) and necessary kernel modules (especially ide-disk) is loaded at
the time.

To boot from SD, I had to manually add the necessary commands to
/etc/altboot.func
