This sounds like the infamous ipaq-sleep bug, where the display can not be
turned on again after it was turned off by ipaq-sleep while on battery power.

Recent commits to angstrom should enable you to work around the problem by
pressing Fn+3 / Fn+4 to raise the brightness of the deactivated screen. Also
closing and re-opening the lid should turn the backlight back on now, could you
please verify?

( "ipkg update && ipkg upgrade" will pull in all updated packages since
installation )
