It should say something more like this:
% file .libs/libavahi_client_la-client.o
.libs/libavahi_client_la-client.o: ELF 32-bit LSB relocatable, MIPS, version 1
(SYSV), not stripped

If it says "data", then it is not a valid executable object. So something
went wrong with the compilation. 

Does it give the same error every time? Are other packages building ok? 
Try running "bitbake avahi -c clean", then "bitbake avahi". 

That line "*) (ret_s))..." is definitely very strange, it looks like program
code. Perhaps you are having a problem with your hard disk. Try running fsck.
