Booting from SD card using altboot works fine for me on Zaurus sl-c1000 akita.
Currently I'm using a 2GB no-name card from supermarket, with one ext2
partition. Earlier attempts to make the machine boot from the cards failed
because I did not put the ext2 partitions with rootfs on them as the first
partitions. I will try booting something from my other card (sandisk 1GB,
transflash in SD adapter) later.
