I don't really remember if I have managed to overcome that. 
After a while a switched for unsupported familiar-unstable to angstrom, and
then went back form OE to familiar git. So I am not able to test it again.
Since familiar-unstable is unsupported I am closing this bug.

For the future generations - I have googled a little bit and I guess that the
problem was wrong CC set in the path. I have started with the pre-built
toolchain from familiar. Strange but I was able to compile everything up to
gcc-cross.....

So if anyone is getting assembler errors - first check the CC.
