This appeared to be qss-related issue. I went from nondterministic working with
manual qpe/qss runs to sustained workability, except for initial setup
(calibration, etc) run. 

I suspect that during initial setup, not all services are started/work
properly, which causes qss to hang/die.

So, this bug stays open.
