This catches one specific error case, can we catch others (i.e. $? != 0) (like
DISPLAY not set) and have them reported too. I'm fine with being helpful if we
can give more information about specific errors btw. Would one of the these
commands ever exit with an exit code != 0 in a non-error situation?
