We had a quick chat amongst the bitbake developers on irc about this. The
conclusion is that the user is responsible for having a reasonably clear
environment. You can do this in one of two ways:

a) having a clean envionment to start with 

b) marking variables as 'unexport' e.g.:

MAKEFLAGS[unexport] = "1"

which you'd add to a config file like site.conf (or local.conf)
