Option 8 allowed the creation of loop files from within altboot itself.  It
would be nice to have that back.

Until then, it seems that 
1) taking an .ext2 image
2) renaming it to rootfs-$whateveryoulikeasID.tar.gz
3) and placing that in the bootimages directory in the root of your media
   /media/card/bootimages/rootfs-$whateveryoulikeasID.tar.gz for example

seems to achieve the same affect.
