Shouldn't the conf/machine/collie.conf include 
  PREFERRED_VERSION_linux-rp ?= "2.6.21"
in this case? Or is there a better place to set the kernel-version for collie
to linux-rp-2.6.21?

I tested to add
  PREFERRED_VERSION_linux-rp ?= "2.6.21"
to my local.conf and it works.
