There is a new kernel in oe now. It has a new driver for mmc cards. 
We use the sd card as rootfs now. If you want to test:
1) bitbake console-image
2) untar it to ext2 formated card (first partition)
3) bitbake linux-kexecboot
4) flash resulting kernel
5) put card in collie and boot
