Thank you for the proposed solution which in general is good, I think.  It
could be made even better by using the directory variables as specified in
http://www.openembedded.org/user-manual&dpage=directories_installation  

I hope to work on this, time permitting. 
packages/opie-ttf-support/opie-ttf-support_1.1.bb is a good example for this.
