Your simplifications are looking good, however did you test this with a stock
angstrom or openmoko rootfs? With your patched init script I get a lot of
errors during /etc/init.d/populate-volatiles, e.g.:

mkdir: cannot create directory /var/lock/: No such file or directory
chown: /var/log/subsys: No such file or directory

Either udevsettle not working correctly or there's some other problem -- please
advise.
