I have observed this behavior here as well. It seems to be related to bug #3378
which has gcc 4.3.0+ complaining about multiple definitions of symbols in
libgmp/libmpfr. I edited the gcc configure script by hand, adding the suggest
linker flag -Wl,--allow-multiple-definition to the ac_link call. This allowed
the configure script to finish successfully but compilation failed soon
afterwords with similar errors.

Looks like any time anything is linked to either of these libs we have to allow
multiple definitions of symbols. I'm just not quite sure how to accomplish
that...
