have an idea why this script should fail unless the framebuffer driver is
totally broken.
(16:11:06) pb_: that linux-kernel thread linked from the bug does seem to
suggest that the kernel fb driver was indeed completely broken in some
versions.

(16:11:33) pb_: if that's the case, you just need a better kernel.
(16:12:04) pb_: florian: apparently some crazy kernel dude changed the write()
semantics to return 0 rather than -ENOSPC when you reach the end of the
framebuffer, so dd would keep on trying to write forever.
(16:12:20) pb_: it looks like that change was reverted again in some later
version though.
