the preferred version in stable is 1.7.1.

Although the debian mirrors do not have the source anymore, Angstrom mirror
still has it. It works for me as of today. Is this still a problem for you?

If you want to bump the preferred version in stable branch, please list what
1.8.3 offers and 1.7.1 doesn't. Reply to this bug or send it to the mailing
list. Btw, the dev branch appears to use 1.9.4. You can also propose to
backport that. Just let us know the specific reasons for upgrade. Otherwise, if
1.7.1 is good enough for now, we have to wait until the next Angstrom release
for a version upgrade.
