I have managed to work around this issue:

Inside the packages/base-passwd/base-passwd-3.5.9/ folder of my OE tree, there
is a file called "root-home.patch". I replaced this file with the
"root-home.patch" which is held within the "slugos" subdirectory of the
"base-passwd-3.5.9". 

There is a README file in the slugos directory which documents the password.
