After several problems with compiling an image, culminating in the dreaded
do_rootfs failure, I gave up for now and tried out
http://www.angstrom-distribution.org/releases/2007.12/images/spitz/Angstrom-opie-image-glibc-ipk-2007.12-r13-spitz-installkit.tgz
and indeed, the touchscreen orientation is just fine in that image.  bug 3678
is present, of course, but overall, the image is much more usable due to a
working touchscreen.

stable: be8d100aad01c4a59921cae8dd3b1be39e3e237d
dev: 3290f95e113d0da965ed4791ceb9de80bb2b03bd

Above are today's revision for .dev and the likely revision from .stable used
for compiling the opie image from Angstrom.  It should be interesting to
inspect the output from "mtn diff -r be8d100aad01c4a59921cae8dd3b1be39e3e237d
-r 3290f95e113d0da965ed4791ceb9de80bb2b03bd"
