--- Comment #5 from Richard Purdie <rpurdie at rpsys.net> 2008-05-27 13:20:38 ---
KERNEL_VERSION in PV is never going to work and is causing the problems.
Bitbake requires certain variables to be parsable at parse time and PV is one
of those fundamental variables. KERNEL_VERSION reads from a file in staging
which may or may not be present. If its present it will work, if not it wont
and I don't really see how packaged-staging fits in but its a red herring.

The best solution for this kind of problem I can come up with is to:

a) Make sure there is a RDEPENDS = "kernel (${KERNEL_VERSION)" like in
module.bbclass so that the package at least has good dependencies.

b) Add some kind of infrastructure for changing PV at package generation time
like debian.bbclass does for PN. This needs a lot of careful thought for
concurrency issues. I'd prefer to only see class level code making that kind of
manipulation so adding functonality to module-base.bbclass would be preferred
to adding to individual packages. The list of PACKAGES with a kernel dependency
could be set in some variable (defauling to PN). Some approach like that might
allow module.bbclass to be used for packages where the module isn't in the main
PN package too.

In summary, this needs more thought but short term, KERNEL_VERSION should be
removed from PV.
