The problem seems to stem from the fact that the file's userid (16777223) and
groupid (16777216) are very big (this is an AD/NIS installation). This leads to
corruption in the fields. Splitting the field along the whitespace fails for
these files. The problem needs to be solved at the creation of the archive but
no solution is obvious, as (according to [1]) the ar format's fields for these
values are too short (6 digits decimal).

Workaround for me is using a local user with a low userid.
