building on ram disks?

Same here on sizes, but a 16G ram disk is within reasonable range these
days. If we assume that you want that much again in available ram, then
we're talking about a 32G server, which is very much in the reasonable
range.
64G servers are not too far out there. And 16G solid state devices are
also available for a few thousand $US.
Dont' really need the whole thing on ramdisk. Putting the build
directory on ramdisk would probably be sufficient for the biggest wins.
