Hi, welcome to the wonderful world of development :)

Regards your question, it all depends on what you want to do and your skill level.

Video processing in a small box? Go for a pico-ITX motherboard (basically a very small PC)

Network gateway? WRT54GL

Network Addressed Storage (NAS)? NSLU2 (also know as slug).

To build your own system from scratch from components, ie buy a processor, memory, FLASH storage, network interface, sound, video, USB, power supply would all need to be thought about.

As your are a beginner, I would suggest buying something like the NSLU2. Good little device to start with. Check out the page www.nslu2-linux.org for info.

Subject: guidance needed to build an embedded linux device:

for example is redboot and ecos a complete system?

As an example:
Has
anyone here on the forum worked with/used Freecom FSG gateway? If yes,
would you please help me understand how does one goes about building
such a device? what comes first and in what order? what established
companies like processor manufacturer / eCos and Redbbot/ gentoo/other flavors... can
do and what a user has to do?

mainboard: readymade by intel?<who else makes them?>
main_processor? intel / arm ?
video processor? <which> / <what are the possiblities>
sound processor?
other adapters like sata/e-sata/usb/wlan etc. <is this hardware seperate or onboard?>

If you have a better example can you please help me understand using that?
