monotone software versioning

Dear folks.

We want to establish a software versioning system for our own
software-development within openembedded.

Therefore there is a need to tag stable branches into the
oe-configurations.

Are there (monotone) capabilies to tell bitbake to use a particular
software-branch without using such variables like "PREFERRED VERSION"?

How do you handle such issues?
