I suppose you are using the .stable branch. The instructions on the page
you mentioned are for the .dev branch only.

That bug is filed against .dev, is this right?

The error message is from a cacao binary. Have a look what is 'java' in
your staging directory. It is a symlink pointing to either jamvm or
cacao. Whatever was built last (Ideally it should not be needed to build
jamvm-native and cacao-native).

You can get ready built packages for the beagleboard via Angstrom. It
also contains cacao, jamvm and phoneme-advanced for your target.
