[Openembedded-users] compiling a uImage or a zImage

I have a working OE installation that will bitbake linux and it creates a
vmlinux and a fitImage for a PPC8323. I am puzzling over how to create (or
modify) a recipe to make a uImage and a zImage.
I tried copying recipes/linux/linux-xxx.bb test.bb and invoking that new
recipe but got caught up in the fact that bitbake was then trying to get
linux-1.0.0 from the repository (obviously a variable/string is empty). I
also tried cd to the linux kernel source tree and using "make
CROSS_COMPILE=powerpc-angstrom-linux- zImage" and got caught in host vs
target issues.
So, ... can someone please help me understand how one "properly" goes about
making a recipe to be able to create a uImage and a zImage *without*
fubarring my original recipe that creates a fitImage.
