Thank you very much for the response Khem.

I used the sample and set both the DISTRO and MACHINE variables 
appropriately.  Since this was a fresh host install, I also cloned the 
OE repo just like the getting started wiki page said.

I solved my issues however and feel fairly embarrassed about it.  I 
missed the big clue when the host detect returned i686-INVALID.  I also 
remember someone once writing that using OE from within a virtual 
machine (vmware player in this case) was sometimes bad.  That was the 
case here.  The host type ends up being an empty field which propagates 
downstream to result in all the errors I encountered.  Performing the 
Getting Started instructions on an actual install of Ubuntu has worked 
great for me so far and I am attempting to put in my own Machine conf 
for the gateworks Laguna platform.
