OE/Yocto "thing" update 2018-11-28

Hi everyone,

I am organizing an OE/Yocto "event" at the upcoming SCaLE conference[1]
under the conviction OE/Yocto needs to expand beyond ELC/E, and OED{A|E}M.
Here is an update on my progress.

Agenda: 1) naming, 2) advertising, 3) date, 4) speakers

1) Naming
So far we haven't, as of yet, 100% settled on a name for the event. I think
the top contenders include "OE/Yocto Summit" and "OE/Yocto Mini-Conf", with
and without the word "User" thrown in there as well (e.g. "OE/Yocto User
Summit").

Ideas? Votes? Suggestions?

2) Advertising
We need a place to advertise this. I'll be sending out an email to the
various OE/Yocto mailing lists (my proposed lists are:
yocto at yoctoproject.org and openembedded-core at lists.openembedded.org) but
the more advertising the better. I don't get the impression there will be
any advertisement on the SCaLE website itself, other than to make people
aware of a general "Embedded Track" occurring at the conference. Would it
be possible/okay to create a page on the OE wiki about it? What about
something on a Yocto page/wiki?

3) Date
Although SCaLE itself is a 4-day event, this OE/Yocto-specific thing will
be 1-day in length. While still not 100% cast in stone, this event is very
likely to occur on Sunday, March 10, 2019.

4) Speakers
So far I've just been contacting some people directly to test the waters
and gauge interest. I have not yet sent out a general request for talks.

For this first such event, my goal is to target "users" of OE/Yocto
(instead of core developers) and invite them to share their experiences
(both good and bad) as part of their initial forays into this project. I'm
keen to reach people who are new, and get their feedback before they learn
all the "tribal knowledge". I would every much like to see future such
events targeted towards core developers. But as a first attempt I'm
interested in a user conference.

As such the current list of people I've contacted includes:
Alistair Francis, Western Digital, RISC-V
Jon Mason, the ARM<->Yocto liaison
Rich Persaud, OpenXT
Katrina Prosise, Togan Labs

We have space for 6 talks if they are 40-minute in length, otherwise we
could have more talks if a bunch of shorter ones are proposed.

Alistair has already committed and confirmed a 40-minute talk. Nothing 100%
confirmed from the rest quite yet, and spaces are still available.

I don't have a hard deadline yet for proposals, my goal is that these talks
be relevant when they are given in March. As such, I don't want to set a
hard date too far before the event. I'll want to firm things up by late
January or early February.

The intention is that these talks will be recorded, and posted online at
some point.

Best regards,
    Trevor
