I think the zcat error is a step in the wrong direction:

1. My non-loopimage installations also display this error, but it works without
a glitch
2. Even after I remove the zcat line, I still have the same problems, and I
never get out of space.

Perhaps it's better to concentrate on the only obvious difference- a loop image
is used on an SD card... I remember knoppix had a problem some time ago with
suspending a laptop while external filesystems were mounted- they were not
accessible when coming up from sleep mode.
