some more trivia:

mickey has the libqt4-core package installed.  I did not.  But even after
installing the package, the build failed for the same reason.

Furthermore, I found out that
$TMPDIR/staging/arm-sonkei-linux-gnueabi/qt4/lib/libQtCore.so does exist. 
Maybe python-pyqt is looking it in $TMPDIR/staging/usr/lib/?  That directory
does not exist here.  Fumbling around a bit with mkdir and ln to create more
instances of the both on the host and in $STAGING did not result in a
successful build.
