Cool down, people. I realize it was a stupid bug report.
I submitted the bug before I heard about Ångström when the future of both
OpenZaurus and GPE was unclear to me. As neither any GPE applicaton nor xkbd
nor any other package in OpenEmbedded was broken I couldn't file a straight
forward bug report as in "error here, patch there", so I kept it 'gossipy'.
Sorry for that.
I and many others out there couldn't figure out ourselves howto add/modify
layouts for the on-screen keyboard, hence we considered the lack of a German
keyboard layout a bug, which I believed would be easily resolved by adding a
file to the repositories or similar. I didn't expect this the block a release
or cause controversy.
However a bug like 3510 "German on screen keyboard layout lacking" would have
been shortsighted. PIM software like GPE Calendar and Contacts is regularly
required to store names and whatever you preferred keyboard layout is, some
characters will not be available. GPE doesn't address this, so it's a valid
wishlist bug, not a showstopper. An advanced on-screen keyboard (distributed
together with GPE) is one possible solution.
I don't mind if someone silently closes this bug.
