Dan, are you using GPE or OPIE?  This is important since both use different
versions of xmms.  Your logs about gtk-problems seem to suggest you have xmms
(for GPE) installed where you might need xmms-embedded for OPIE.  That would
also explain the missing icon.  xmms is a GPE app and only installs an icon for
GPE.
