with the ugly hack adding up udev start to the "altboot SD-boot menu script" I
got a step further. The read only thing was something about the sd card. I
copied a rootfs to a different card and the script continued its routine: 

mounting the card, asking about whether to keep sd install target and altering
home appears but is skipping automatic, followed by 

Piovting root.../sbin/init: /etc/altboot-menu/15-bootSD: 1182: echo: not found

[..]

mount/clear/echo/ not found

then the machine dies.
